Family House, Vouliagmeni, Athens

Family House, Vouliagmeni, Athens

The Project

Pre-existing villa in the beautiful area of Vouliagmeni, in Attica, overlooking the sea.

The villa features “free-form” and minimal architecture. It has a “composite” superstructure, while the basement and pool are made of reinforced concrete.

Owner and architect pursued the architectural upgrading, for which it was also considered necessary to upgrade parts of the load-bearing structure in terms of statics and earthquake resistance.

To this end, the bottom slab of the pool – which is at the same time the roof of the basement – was strengthened. The superstructure of the villa was strengthened too, in which the “dead” and “live” loads increased, and consequently the need for increasing the strength of the horizontal loads baring structural elements came up.

For this reason, strengthening additions have been made to the composite steel structure. This highlights the wide freedom of choice in how to intervene in existing buildings and upgrade them, whether they are made of reinforced concrete or structural steel or a composite section. The wide freedom of choice contributes in achieving with absolute precision and consistency the desired architectural and functional result.
