Villa in Argolis, Peloponnese

Villa in Argolis, Peloponnese

The Project

An ultra-modern country villa, in one of the most beautiful landscapes of Argolida, in front of the sea, which is a symbol of minimal architecture, of the architect Fotini Xyrafi.

The building is made of reinforced concrete and consists of basement and ground floor. The feature of the structure is that the architect has played with geometric solids within the natural landscape. Specifically, she tries to create a space of life inside and outside the building, under a solid body, a slab of dimensions 20.00mx 20.00mx 0.50m, which balances diagonally, in two points,

leaving absolutely free, without any intermediate support, above from 50% of the perimeter, so that the view of the sea and the opposite islands is unobstructed.

This diagonal support of the square plate, the size of the diagonal free cantilever being of the order of 17.00m, is a static challenge, which was solved by the application of post tensioning in both diagonal directions. The sense of equilibrium is totally intense, the concept of the center of gravity, the concept of the solid body on point supports, is visible inside and outside the villa, as well as the entire structure of this geometric sculpture in this particular natural environment.

From an anti-seismic point of view, the problem is to deal with “weak links”. Obviously the vertical elements supporting the 500 tons of post tensioned concrete of the slab are obviously over reinforced. Against overturning, the slab is back anchored  by the other vertical elements, located on the back of the house, upstream.

The construction was made with absolute precision and quality and the most advanced plate post tensioning technology was used with flat tendon tubes and their placement was made with precision to conform to the construction drawings and calculations. The result was impressive when the scaffolding was removed and the cantilever of 17.00m stood, with absolutely controlled deformations, short- and long-term, under which glazing was placed around the perimeter, offering seamless view to the seafront.
