Family House, Dionysos, Athens
An ultramodern, minimal, luxurious villa, in Athens, in one of the last wooded areas near the urban environment.
It is an existing detached house in Ekali, one of the most beautiful areas of the northern suburbs of Athens, with extensive greenery.
The dwelling was purchased unfinished at the stage of completion of the reinforced-concrete frame.
There was extensive architectural redesign by the architects Dimitris and Liana Potiropopoulos.
From the existing reinforced-concrete skeleton a minimal, ultramodern Villa featuring modern materials and a distinct geometric character had to be created, also featuring large openings, vertical communication between the floors as well as horizontal communication between the interior of the house and the outdoor environment and the swimming pool.
The finished building had to be of the highest quality, absolutely safe, durable, earthquake resistant, despite all the modifications, changes, additions and extensions that the original load bearing structure had to assume.
The project was realized in 2008, with a very close collaboration between the architect and the structural engineer – which is always necessary in such cases – and of course the result was absolutely successful. It is one of the most prominent modern structures, both for its interior and for its exterior design.
The statics and earthquake-resistance interventions were mainly conducted on vertical elements – as a lift was added, some columns were removed, some peripheral vertical elements were reinforced with steel-profiles and others had their cross-sections increased in order to perform as shear walls. Horizontal elements were also strengthened such as certain slabs which were found to be of insufficient load-bearing capacity.
The bearing body is entirely of reinforced concrete with some composite elements, where necessary, such as concrete-filled steel-profile columns.
Such projects confirm the ability to support any architectural redesign of structures, however demanding they may be.
