Family House, Dionysos, Athens
An ultramodern, minimal, luxurious villa, in Athens, in one of the last wooded areas near the urban environment.
In the midst of a vineyard and on the “location” of the old building, which collapsed completely in the 1953 earthquake, which occurred on the island of Zakynthos, it was decided in 2002 to build a new building that resembles morphologically the old one. The targets were that the new villa should consist from a basement, a ground floor and a first floor, also that the load-bearing body the structure should be constructed out of reinforced concrete and furthermore that the villa should feature symmetry, uniformity, continuous pillars and even openings.
From an architectural point of view, it is perfectly in harmony with the natural environment of the vineyard and the surrounding fruit trees. The villa has a tile roof, small heights and it allows dense and “through and through” circulation from the inside to the outside covered terraces and semi-open spaces and “vice-versa”. It fully validates the words of the great Greek architect Aris Konstantinidis who wrote that “living in Greece is outdoors”.
Since the soil in this area is very “compliant”, the method of stiff and high-strength reinforced concrete building was proposed and applied, against earthquake stimulation, a frequent phenomenon of the area. The building was built with many shear walls, on x and y directions on the periphery and on the corners, and did not show any damage during the earthquakes of 2006, 2012 and 2018.
