Aneli Villas, Aegina Isle
Coastal house on the north side of Aegina, built in 1968 from reinforced concrete, without shear walls.
This is a group presentation of residences, distinguished for their special architectural style, works of the architect Nikos Ktenas.
The featured buildings include a double residence in Papagou – Athens, a residence in Paiania – Attika and six holiday villas in Andros – an island of the Cyclades.
A distinctive characteristic of the architect’s style is that the load-bearing structure is visible and shows to everybody the way the building is supported and the flow of forces towards the foundations and the ground.
The aim of the statics solution is to fully serve the architectural design, to have a complete coincidence and integration of the load-bearing structure into the architectural one.
The above mentioned buildings are some of the early projects that introduced “minimal style” architecture in Greece.
Their statics and earthquake-resistance behavior was assured by the method of “capacity” design: the vulnerable locations of the load-bearing structure were turned into strong ones through the appropriate design of the reinforced-concrete frame and the use of suitable materials and types of connection at these points.
Only through the “smart” and detailed application of “engineering” science in order to ensure adequate support and endurance of the structure, the architect is given the chance of free design.
