Houses of Minimal Design

Houses of Minimal Design

The Project

Group presentation of a two-family house in Papagou in Athens, a residence in Peania, a suburb of Athens and six vacation houses in Andros, an island near Attica, the works of architect Nikos Ktenas, distinguished for their special architectural style.

The aim of the static solution is to fully serve the architectural proposition, i.e. to have a complete identification and integration of the bearing body with the architectural one. One point that distinguishes this architect is that the structure is evident and testifies to the way the building is supported, i.e. the flow of forces to the foundation.

These homes are some of the early projects, that introduced the minimal design in Greece. Their static and antiseismic behavior was assured by the method of the capacity design, namely the elimination of the “weak link” and its transformation into a strong one, through the design of the skeleton and the use of appropriate materials and connections in those points. That’s how the architect can be given the chance of free design, with the application of mechanical logic to ensure adequate support and resistance.
