OTE Telecoms Building, Rethymno, Crete Isle
Three “adjoining” 1950s buildings in Rethymno, Krete, are reconstructed and have their use changed.
It is an office building, in Thermi, Municipality of Thessaloniki, on the highway that connects the city centre with the airport. It belongs to the well-known multinational company ABB, which is active in the field of electrical equipment and automation systems. The architectural design has been realized by the architect Nikos Ktenas. It is a benchmark for minimal architecture in professional buildings.
The design features very large, open office spaces, which have plenty of natural lighting that is adjusted with blinds. The masonry is entirely of dry construction. The building had to be completed and operated in a short space of time for the needs of the company.
Its form is characterized by simple geometric shapes. It consists of an extended basement of reinforced concrete, which serves as parking and storage space, while the superstructure is constructed out of steel profiles. The ground floor is partially open, in pilotis form, followed by 2 floors on one side of the building, while the other side there is only one.
The load-bearing body of the superstructure consists of composite slabs and steel frames with vertical crossed bracings that offer strength and stiffness against wind and seismic loads. On the ground floor the stiffness is given by oblique struts, while on the floors there are symmetrically constructed truss walls and truss cores, in order to avoid rotational oscillations. The dimensioning of the steel joint connections was made with the utmost care and precision, so as not to constitute the “Achilles heel” in the event of an earthquake. Particular attention was also paid to avoiding premature buckling of the steel structural elements.
The oblique struts on the ground floor are covered in a way to show their original shape and create a wonderful architectural result. Once again it turns out that the logic of the forms should be obvious.
