New International Airport of Athens “El. Venizelos”

New International Airport of Athens “El. Venizelos”

The Project

The largest airport in the country, designed with the prospect of future expansion. Its traffic has reached 24 million passengers in 2018. Construction was appointed to the German construction company Hochtief AG.

Cubus Hellas performed the main terminal and satellite buildings static and earthquake resistant design, of a total area of about 40000 m2, comprising of five floor reinforced concrete buildings with seismic cores and shear walls. They are separated by expansion joints in 50-70m distances.

Between the buildings, there are 60x60m steel truss roofs, supported on four internal steel columns as also perimetrically on the four adjacent buildings.

In order to avoid excessive displacements in the joints between steel roof and building in case of an earthquake, viscous dampers were installed. A few months after their installation in September 1999, a 5.9 Richter quake happened. The buildings sustained no damage at all and the displacements were indeed constrained within acceptable limits.
