Earthquake-Resistant Design of Existing and New Structures through the Push Over Method, 2001

June 6, 2001

The purpose of earthquake-resistant design is to improve the structure’s mechanical behaviour. This improvement must mainly focus on the following three fields:
• Reduction of total deformation (elastic and particularly non-elastic)
• Reduction of inertial forces which develop within the structure during the earthquake
• Capacity to absorb energy through plastic deformation (or any kind of energy-absorbing procedure) without the occurence of fractures
