The purpose of earthquake-resistant design is to improve the structure’s mechanical behaviour. This improvement must mainly focus on the following three fields: • Reduction of total deformation (elastic and particularly non-elastic) • Reduction of inertial forces which develop within the structure during the earthquake • Capacity to absorb energy through plastic deformation (or any kind of energy-absorbing procedure) without the occurence of fractures
