Two neoclassical, heritage-listed buildings, built in 1920s-30s, in the center of Athens, on the busy, shopping Aeolou street, are to be renovated, united into one and completely redesigned to be used as shops and offices.
This also requires the redesign of their E / M installations.
The proposed solution, against static and seismic loads, provides for the construction of a new load-bearing, reinforced concrete structure comprising a new core hosting the staircase and lift, properly fixed on its own “foundation”.
On the inner side of the perimeter walls, “concealed” shotcrete composite columns with embedded steel profiles were constructed to undertake the loads of the new reinforced concrete slabs and to strengthen the stone masonry to undertake the horizontal seismic loads.
It is a safe, completely earthquake-resistant, fire-resistant solution with several elements of conventional construction, making it easy to implement.
The solution still provides for the foundation of all new elements on the reinforced concrete slab on ground.
Finally, a new wooden roof is also built, which is also erected on the reinforced concrete slab.
